Situated 8,200 feet above the valley floor, Machu Picchu is a marvel of Incan architecture and engineering, nestled between two peaks of the eastern Andes and bordering the Amazon rainforest. Historians believe it may have served as a sanctuary for the Inca "Virgins of the Sun" during the Spanish conquest. Upon arrival in Aguas Calientes, take a shuttle up the winding mountain road to the ruins. Enjoy a full-day guided tour with expert insights into this sacred site. Lunch will be served at the Sanctuary Lodge, located next to the ruins. Later, return to your hotel in Aguas Calientes.

Today, witness the spectacular Inti Raymi festival – the most grand and revered pre-Hispanic ceremony in honor of the sun. Held on the Winter Solstice in the southern hemisphere, this ancient ritual celebrates the sun god Inti and the Andean harvest. Now meticulously recreated by Cusco's historians, archaeologists, and scholars, the ceremony takes place on the esplanade below the mighty Sacsayhuaman fortress, just 2 km from the city. Thousands of costumed actors reenact the sacred ritual in vivid detail. The Inca emperor is carried on a royal litter from the Koricancha (Temple of the Sun) to Cusco’s main square, Huacaypata, where he symbolically commands just governance for the people. Described by Spanish chroniclers as “the most impressive and splendid of all the feasts in pre-Columbian America,” this is an unmissable cultural experience.
