Depart the hotel after a sumptuous breakfast for an excursion to the Plitvice Lakes National Park, designated as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1979, you'll encounter a remarkable landscape. Situated between Mala Kapela Mountain and Pljesevica Mountain, the park features 16 interconnected lakes. These lakes are categorized into upper and lower lakes, each with distinct geological formations. The upper lakes are separated by dolomite barriers that gradually form travertine barriers due to the deposition of calcium carbonate from flowing waters. In contrast, the lower lakes were shaped by the collapse and subsidence of vaults over underground cavities. This geological process resulted in the creation of the lower lakes and the disappearance of water from the upper lakes through subterranean channels. From mid-April to the end of October, all three entrances to the National Park—Entrance No. 1, Entrance No. 2, and the additional Flora entrance—are open. During this time, scenic trains and electric ferries operate on Lake Kozjak.
